West Midlands Tutor Panel

Teaching for the WEA is a challenge, no doubt about that.

Our tutors go into communities and work with the members of those communities. They are the face of the WEA. They take responsibility for our groups of students, trying to meet the demands of their second chance at education and/or their uncompromising desire to learn and keep on learning.

To cope with the wide range of curriculum areas, the large number of learners and the geographical area the WEA West Midlands covers, we work with a sessional tutor pool. Tutors are contracted to teach specific courses. This gives them a great deal of flexibility in choosing their hours and place of work and helps us to be responsive to the needs of the learners.

We work hard to make sure that tutors feel part of the organisation. We try and communicate regularly by means of area and curriculum team meetings and hold regular Continuing Professional Development days. Each sub-region in the West Midlands has a Programme Area Manager who supports the tutors and is their first point of contact with the Association. Tutors will receive quarterly WEA newsletters and other relevant Association information. Tutors also have access to a restricted part of this website, with curriculum, team and region-wide information.

Currently we are particularly keen to hear from tutors who can add interesting new courses to the branch programme or who are qualified and experienced in health & fitness, sign language and lip reading.
