Trade Union and Workplace Learning

The WEA in the West Midlands Region has a long and successful relationship with the trade union movement where we work closely with the TUC Education Service and UNISON as well as other individual trade unions. The trade union programme offers a variety of accredited courses to suit the needs of both representatives and members.

The WEA TUC education programme is designed to train and support trade union representatives and trade union activists to do a better job and get more out of the union. WEA plays a key role in delivering courses to trade union representatives who can build their knowledge and skills to support colleagues with issues that can arise in the workplace.

Trade union representatives are the key link between the workplace and members and the wider union and as such our representatives programme prepares you to:

• Consult and work with members

• Negotiate with employers to formulate policy and agreements

• Have a greater understanding of trade union policies and priorities

• Develop personal and study skills

• Offer individual members opportunities for accreditation and progression into trade union activity or further education and training courses

Our courses are tutored by experienced trade union tutors and are designed to encourage everyone to learn in a friendly, supportive environment. Our experienced tutors provide all the support, information and advice you need to succeed in your chosen programme and are always on hand to advise on suitable programmes that will enhance your role or prepare you for further study. Courses are offered in different venues across the West Midlands including Walsall, Coventry and Worcester.

Our courses give learners the opportunity to achieve nationally recognised qualifications awarded through the National Open College Network (NOCN) and to progress through a range of courses. Courses offered include Union Representatives Stage 1, Stepping up (Stage 2), Health and Safety Stage 1, Next Steps (Stage 2), Diploma in Employment Law, Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety and Union Learning Reps training, we also offer a range of short courses on specific subjects.

WEA is fully committed to equal opportunities and our courses are provided regardless of gender, age, religious or political belief, disability or sexual orientation. We welcome applications from representatives of all backgrounds and from all trade unions. WEA offers training courses for those living or working in Birmingham, Staffordshire, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Warwickshire, Worcestershire or other areas of the West Midlands.
