The West Midlands: some facts!

The West Midlands is a large and varied area, covering 12,998 sq. km. with a population of 5.27m people (10.7 per cent of the population of England). More than half of the region’s population lives in large conurbations (such as Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton), while over 2 million people reside in the region’s rural counties (such as Herefordshire & Worcestershire), which make up three-quarters of the region’s area.

The WEA in the West Midlands

If we are going to offer an educational programme that meets the learning needs of all adults in such a complex area as the West Midlands, it is important to work in local communities.

We have therefore divided the West Midlands into smaller regions, with local staff teams and Study Centres.  By working locally, we learn what the issues are that people face in their communities and what their educational needs are.   We have over time built up a network of community contacts and partners who work with us to develop an education programme to suit.

The Study Centres are central to this local role.  Staff are often based there and a large number of our courses are held there.  They are also places where you can go for advice and guidance.  The remainder of our course programme is delivered in community venues or workplaces, right on your doorstep.

We also have local volunteer groups organised in branches, who organise courses and day schools covering a great variety of interesting subjects.
