The Tandrusti Project
TANDRUSTI (Tan-drust-ee) "A sound condition of the mind or body. State of being free from illness. The person who is tandrust is having good health, or is capable of producing good health." The WEA Tandrusti Project was set up to address the health needs and experiences of minority ethnic communities in Dudley. Scientific research had shown these groups were at a much greater risk from diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke.
Lifestyle factors contribute greatly to these diseases and addressing those in this particular group of learners is not always easy due to language or cultural barriers. A fundamental role of the project is therefore making sure that the health information and advice given to minority ethnic communities is culturally sensitive and relevant to them. The program started in 2001 with support from the Big Lottery Fund. The first three years of the project targeted South Asian communities aged over 60. It is now working with adult organisations across the Sikh, Hindu, Muslim, Bangladeshi, Gujarati, Yemeni, Afro-Caribbean and British communities. The project steering group consists of members from the WEA, Dudley PCTs, Dudley MBC, Adult & Community Learning and Action Heart. The project is managed by two full-time staff (a Project Manager and a Project Organiser) and employs seven part-time tutors.
"It's the first time anybody has taken an interest in my health since I had a stroke 15 years ago." The Project works to improve the health and quality of life of minority ethnic communities by making people more aware of the important contribution that physical activity can make towards improving health, wellbeing and independence. Learners learn that exercise helps in preventing and managing medical conditions and in improving their quality of life.
The current Tandrusti curriculum includes courses on:
and workshops on:
Recent Adult Learning Inspectorate stated that Tandrusti is: "A very effective project" "Good practice of assessing literacy and language skills and recording progress" ALI (Jan 2005)
