Skills for Life (SfL) in West Midlands

Skills for Life in the West Midlands

Our Skills for Life courses are for anyone who missed out on education the first time round and would like a second chance. They are especially useful for those who left school early with no qualifications and who would like a certificate in English or Maths.

All our courses have this in common:

  • they are run in an informal atmosphere
  • in local venues
  • with experienced friendly tutors who will treat you with respect
  • they are practical, stimulating and fun
  • they are held at a time to suit you

because we know people learn best when they are are at ease, enjoying themselves and doing something relevant at the same time.

We run about 50 different courses which will help you develop your English and Maths. Many of them offer you the chance to improve your skills while learning another subject. For example, we might combine written English with computer skills, or speaking and listening skills with a healthy eating course. Some courses will help you with everyday tasks, for example maths for DIY, while others focus on job skills, for example presenting yourself in an interview or writing a CV.

In all our courses there are opportunities to work in pairs and small groups, but the tutor will make sure you also receive plenty of individual attention, so that you get all the support you need. If you need extra help, for example if you are dyslexic or have sight or hearing problems, we can offer you support so that you can complete the course.

We run our courses in local venues all over the West Midlands such as community centres, schools and libraries, and try to organise them so that they fit in with people's busy lives. For example, most of our courses fit in the school day (9.30am - 12.30pm or 1pm - 3pm) to fit in the school day. However, for people who are working we organise evening courses or courses in the workplace during work hours.
