ABOUT THE BRANCH

early North Staffs members

The WEA has been active in North Staffordshire for more than 100 years. First courses were at Tawney House in Longton. Until 2004 there was an office in Hanley called Cartwright House. Mr Tawney and Mr Cartwright were two of the very early tutors of the WEA.

Newcastle & Wolstanton branch try to continue this tradition by continuing to offer a varied programme of courses, for example:

  • Garden & Fashion History
  • Military & Social History of the British Civil Wars: 1639-1660
  • The North Staffs Railway in the LMS Era 1923-1947
  • The World of Katherine Swynford
  • Computers for Mature Learners
  • Digital Photography
  • Exploring Light and Shade
  • Music Through the Ages
  • The Stuff of Dreams (history of theatre)
  • A Study of Birds
  • Practical Gardening

The branch also organises day schools and trips, such as:

  • A Day out to the World Heritage Village of Saltaire and the National Museum of Photography in Bradford
  • Fashionable Life in Medieval and Tudor Times
