Information and Communication Technology
We have been teaching ICT across the region for 10 years and many thousands of students have taken our courses. For many of these this has been their first experience of using a computer and the majority have taken one of the starter courses.
There are many reasons students have given us for taking our courses in ICT: keeping up with a changing world, a desire to use the internet and send emails, improving job prospects and helping children and grandchildren are some common examples.
For most people it has been their first step back into education for many years and we aim, through our friendly and informal courses to make this an enjoyable adventure.
In some instances our courses are targeted at particular groups: the over 50s, computing for the terrified and short taster courses are examples of these.
Most of our students go on to further courses; Using the Internet, Desktop Publishing and Using Spreadsheets are popular and some opt for the more formal qualifications such as CLAIT. But there are less conventional ICT courses, such as Building your Own Computer and Digital Photography, that are becoming more and more popular.
In addition to having well qualified tutors, many courses have volunteers in classes to support the tutor and provide one-to-one assistance to students. These are vital members of our team. They are normally former students who enjoy the WEA and give of their own free time to help others.
Generally we run courses in well-equipped computer suites at our own Study Centres (Telford, Rugeley, West Bromwich, Coventry and Worcester) or in colleges, but where this is not possible we can use portable equipment to take courses into the community.
Our aim is to provide enjoyment through learning in a friendly and helpful environment.
