Humanities

There is a vast number of courses provided by the WEA under the above heading and they encompass tremendous variety. The most popular courses at the moment seem to be on topics like Family History, Local History, Creative Writing and Poetry, but there are many courses that don't fit into such tidy categories. For example, a course called "The Curious History of Shops" embraces history and economics, but also architecture and design, and sociology, town-planning and "life-styles"!

Perhaps the key about courses in this area is that they are very much about opinions and ideas. Your tutor may be an expert in his/her subject, but these classes are full of lively discussion, inviting contributions and expertise from all other group members. Whether it’s a matter of analysing the Fall of the Hapsburgs, the Rise of the Co-op, or a poem or novel, theses classes will help you develop an informed opinion and give you plenty of opportunity to share that opinion with your fellow learners.

Most of the courses are organised by WEA branches, so find out what's going on by contacting your nearest branch. Please click on this link to access the branch page.
